1824

In the Peruvian War of Independence, 9,300 Spaniards under Laserna are defeated by Peruvian patriots led by Sucre at the battle of Ayacucho; the battle led to Peru's independence.

1956

Viet Nam's President Ho Chi Minh decrees press regulations to protect rights of media workers.

1982

Establishment of Hoang Sa District of Quang Nam-Da Nang Province, now Da Nang, including the whole of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelago in the East Sea; and establishment of Truong Sa District, of now Khanh Hoa Province, including the whole of the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago.

1994

Britain and Sinn Fein, the Irish Republican Army's political wing, hold their first formal talks for more than 70 years.
