1730

Birth of French astronomer Charles Messier. He discovered numerous comets and was nicknamed The Comet Ferret by King Louis XV.

1858

The Treaty of Tientsin is signed, ending hostilities between China and Great Britain and granting the latter trade rights, whereby China opens additional ports to British commerce and legalises the opium trade.

1926

The French government issues regulations permitting Hai Phong Port to have full autonomy in the area. The regulations took effect on April 1 the following year. Hai Phong Port, located in Hai Phong City 100km southeast of Ha Noi, is Viet Nam's second largest commercial port, after Sai Gon Port.

1945

The United Nations Charter is signed by 50 nations in San Francisco, California, succeeding the League of Nations. It became effective on October 24. From this year, June 26 is considered the United Nations Charter Day.

1977

Elvis Presley, US famous rock ‘n' roll singer, makes his final concert performance at Indianapolis.

2000

Scientists announce that the human genetic code has essentially been deciphered, a monumental achievement that opens a dramatic new frontier in medicine.

The US and the EU agree in a joint statement to back Iraq's request for NATO military assistance to support the training of Iraqi security forces, and to reduce Iraq's international debt
