1594

Willem Barents, Dutch navigator, begins the first of his three voyages from the Netherlands , in search of a north-east passage to Asia .

1862

The Vietnamese Hue Court signs a peace accord, ceding the three south-eastern provinces of Gia Dinh, Dinh Tuong and Bien Hoa, and Con Lon Island to the French, thus easing the latter's scheme to conquer the country gradually.

1911

Viet Nam 's Nguyen Tat Thanh (Ho Chi Minh) boards the SS l'Amiral Latouche Treville at Nha Rong Harbour in Sai Gon, beginning a long quest to save his country from French rule.

1954

Greece , Turkey and Yugoslavia announce they have formed a Balkan Alliance.

1967

The Six-Day War between Israel and her Arab neighbours Egypt , Jordan, Syria , Iraq and Lebanon begins.

1976

The Foreign Ministry of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Viet Nam issues a statement reaffirming its sovereignty over the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago.

1982

The United Nations Environment Programme chooses this date to become World Environment Day.

2001

The United Nations marks the 20th anniversary of the first official report on AIDS. An estimated 58 million people have contracted HIV, and more than 22 million of them have died in the last two decades.

2003

The United States and the Republic of Korea (RoK) reach an agreement which will result in the removal of US troops from the demilitarised zone, or the DMZ, that separates RoK and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). — AP
