KON TUM — A rare black-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix nigripes) was found dead in a bag thrown onto the road by a driver in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum earlier this week.
The incident occurred in Sa Thay District as the driver was fleeing from forest inspectors.
Meanwhile, in Nam Mo Ray Commune, a worker for the Dak Lak Rubber Company caught a young black-shanked douc when he was clearing trees to plant rubber. He handed it over to authorities.
The black-shanked douc is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Vietnamese Laws, but many continue to be killed for their meat. — VNS
