HA NOI — Saltwater is expected to encroach up to 50 kilometres into local rivers in Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta provinces this dry season, according to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research.
The rivers include Cua Tieu, Co Chien, Cung Hau, Dinh An, Tran De and Cai Lon.
The water has a salinity of approximately 4 per cent, which is believed to be harmful to crops.
The problem will be most pronounced in March and April, when salinity levels will reach their highest point. — VNS
