Illegal sand exploitation returns to the southern province of Binh Dinh

Update: February, 10/2012 - 16:59

Ha Noi – Illegal sand exploitation in My Thanh village has been running rampant in recent days, said chairman of My Thanh village Ngo Hai.

About 30-40 boats sail to the Bai Dang area everyday to illegally exploit sand, he said.

The sand is rich with crude titan ore which can be extracted and sold for a profit.

Illegal sand exploitation had surged since the beginning of this year, causing headaches for local authorities as it was very difficult to stop, Hai said.

Bai Dang has a large titan reserve but the People's Committee of Binh Thuan Province has banned all exploitation activities. Illegal exploitation was widespread last year but ceased with the help of border army forces. However, when the forces moved out of the area locals resumed their illegal activities. – VNS
