HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam Youth Theatre will treat audiences to a show that combines artistry with the latest technology on the occasion of International Children’s Day, which falls on June 1 and coincides with the start of summer vacation.

The show is a musical production titled Giấc Mơ Của Nàng Tiên Cá (Mermaid’s Dream) based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale. Artistes will perform behind a full screen sheer curtain with 5D hologram technology.

"We want to bring something new to our audiences," said veteran artist Cao Ngọc Ánh. "Every year in the summer vacation the youth theatre has a repertoire to entertain children. This year, Mermaid’s Dream will charm the little audiences with a show full of visual effects.

"With 5D-technology effects the stage looks like an ocean. I hope the little audience members will enjoy it," Ánh said.

The Vietnamese version of Mermaid’s Dream focuses on one theme of the original story: the quest for happiness. Unlike the original, which doesn’t mention much about the mermaid’s mother, the script is written to tell the story of the mermaid’s journey to look for her mother.

Audience members will meet not only characters familiar from the original tale, such as the Sea King, the mermaid and the Prince, but also many sea creatures like Black Octopus Witch, the rescue team of Shrimp, Crab and Fish, dolphins and jellyfish.

The 60-minute show features 12 songs with the theme song Ước Mơ Tìm Mẹ (Dream to Find My Mother), composed by musician Tường Văn.

Cluck cluck: The Chicken’s Joy comedy is one of three new theatre productions by Việt Nam Youth Theatre in summer time.

The show is included in a new repertoire by the youth theatre to give children a chance to see art shows while on summer vacation. Two plays Niềm Vui Của Đám Gà Nhà (The Chicken’s Joy) and Căn Bếp Đại Chiến (War in Kitchen) will entertain children with small stories about friendship, belief, bravery, patience and diligence.

The Chicken’s Joy’s script is written by Đinh Tiến Dũng whose comedy scripts staged at the youth theatre are popular. War in Kitchen is directed by established artist Bùi Như Lai. Lai won the Việt Nam Stage Artists’ Association’s award at the Talented Director Competition and has produced many children’s plays for the theatre.

Việt Nam Youth Theatre’s repertoire included summer performances like Ngôi Nhà Của Bé (House of Children) featuring circus and drama elements. The show became one of the theatre’s favourite shows performed for 15 consecutive years on the occasion of International Children’s Day.

All the shows will be performed from May 17 at 11 Ngô Thì Nhậm Street. — VNS
