HCM CITY — Young women from across the country are encouraged to participate in the national Miss Việt Nam 2018 competition, which has just been launched.

Women aged 18 to 26 who are at least 1.65m tall and have had no cosmetic surgery are eligible to enter the contest.

The contest organisers are Tiền Phong newspaper in co-operation with Việt Nam Women’s Association and Sen Vàng Agency.

They have invited a group of experts in the field to select 30 candidates for the semifinal rounds in Nghệ An and Quy Nhơn provinces.

At the semifinals scheduled to be held in mid-September, the contestants will compete in the categories of traditional costumes, swimsuits, question-and-answer sessions and evening wear.

They will also take part in two additional competitions highlighting their talent and charity work.

Miss Việt Nam 2016 Đỗ Mỹ Linh will support contestants during the event.

Five finalists will compete on the final night on September 22 at Phú Thọ Gymnasium in HCM City’s Tân Bình District.

The winner will receive VNĐ500 million (US$24,000) in cash and gifts worth several hundred millions of đồng, while the runner-ups will take home VNĐ200 million ($9,500) each.

The winner will represent Việt Nam in the global competition Miss World 2018.

Organisers will also present Miss Charming Face, Miss Sports and Miss Áo Dài (Vietnamese traditional long dress) and Miss Charity.

The event will be broadcast live on Việt Nam Television.

"We target turning this beauty contest into a charming introduction to the country’s tourism, highlighting famous tourist attractions,” said Lê Xuân Sơn, editor-in-chief of Tiền Phong newspaper and head of Miss Việt Nam 2018’s organising board.

Miss Việt Nam began in 1988 and has been organised every two years. The contest has encouraged many young women to demonstrate their talent in careers and charity and social activities.

“We hope our event will offer a chance to young women, particularly those living in remote areas, to live more happily and confidently,” Sơn added.
