HCM CITY — Chuyện Tình Nàng Giáng Hương (Love Story of Giáng Hương), a musical based on Vietnamese fairy tale Từ Thức Gặp Tiên (Từ Thức Meets a Fairy), will return for eight nights at the HCM City Opera House.

The play is about the love between Từ Thức, a poor man, and a fairy named Giáng Hương, who face problems being together. Their love does not have a happy ending.

The co-production of French director Sylvain Merille and Vietnamese director Trần Nguyễn Thiên Hương premiered at Hòa Bình Theatre in 2016, using music by famous composers such as Văn Cao, Trịnh Công Sơn, Phạm Duy and Ngô Thụy Miên.

In order to prepare for the return, Hương and composer Nguyễn Hoàng Anh have written 21 new songs for the musical, featuring Vietnamese traditional music, semi-classic, pop, rock and Latin music.

“The music is a blend of traditional music and Western music,” Hương said. “To renew the play, we used thousands of metres of fiber optic lights to feature the actors’ performances and stimulate the audiences’ imagination.”

The musical will feature 20 veteran and young actors, including Nam Khánh, Hoàng Kim, Thanh Nguyên and Duyên Quỳnh, who are graduates of the HCM City Conservatory of Music.

Chuyện Tình Nàng Giáng Hương has been staging from November 20-23 and December 1-4 at the Opera House at 7 Lam Sơn Square in District 1.

Tickets are available at the venue and at www.ticketbox.vn. — VNS
