HÀ NỘI — Veteran theatre artists were honoured at a ceremony held at the Hà Nội Opera House on Sunday to mark the 60th anniversary of the Việt Nam Theatre Artists’ Association.

The artists that were honoured are those who have contributed to developing theatre in Việt Nam, including chèo (popular theatre) artist Trần Bảng. Bảng, 92, is regarded as one of the artists who successfully revived old chèo performances.

During a long 60-year period, the association has had many members engaged in a wide range of art forms, such as tuồng (traditional opera), chèo (popular theatre), cải lương (reformed theatre) and modern drama. Several of these members were awarded People’s Artist and Meritorious Artist titles.

The association has made significant efforts to preserve culture and art treasures and develop Vietnamese theatre.

Several activities were held on the occasion, which also celebrated Stage Ancestors falling on lunar August 12. A gala gathering nearly 100 popular artists from the whole country was held in Hà Nội featuring Vietnamese stage extracts.
