HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Musicians’ Association has just announced the best works of 2016.

As many as 33 awards have been given to songs, including two A prizes, 11 Bs, 15 Cs and five encouragement prizes.

The song Cướp Vợ Mùa Yêu (Love Season) by composer Mạnh Cường from the northern province of Điện Biên and Miền Tây Ngày Nắng Lên (Sunny Day in the West of Mekong Delta) by composer Quang Thanh Giang from the southern province of Cần Thơ won the A prizes for their local cultural features and beautiful melodies.

Thirteen children’s songs were awarded, including Chim Công Kể Chuyện (A Peacock’s Story) by Đà Nẵng-based composer Trịnh Tuấn Khanh and English Songs for Third-Grade Pupils by Hà Nội-based Lê Anh Tuấn.

Giao Hưởng Số 3 (The Third Symphony) by Trần Mạnh Hùng from HCM City has been awarded the best symphony of 2016.

In the opera and orchestra category, Lá Đỏ (Red Leaves) by composer Đỗ Hồng Quân from Hà Nội won the top prize.

In the chamber music category, there was no A prize, but two B prizes were given, one to a solo monochord instrument together with folk music orchestra performance Biển Quê Hương (Homeland Sea) by Nguyễn Thúy My from Hà Nội, and the second to a concert titled Lời tre nứa (Bamboo’s Words), which used bamboo instruments, composed by Hà Nội-based Doãn Tiến.

The association also gave awards to two shows recorded on CDs, titled Công Nông Binh (Workers, Farmers and Soldiers) by Trần Hồng Nhung (Hà Nội) and Raft by UK-based pianist Nguyễn Bích Trà. — VNS
