HCM CITY — Trịnh Nhật Minh, a nine-year-old boy from Hà Nội, beat three other finalists to win the fourth season of The Voice Kid Vietnam.

Minh, who inheritted his great passion for singing from his father – a chèo (traditional opera) artist of the Hà Nội Chèo Theatre –  delivered an excellent performance during Saturday night’s finale where he staged an extract of the chèo play Phù Thủy Bắt Ma (Witch Catches the Ghost). His skillful singing techniques and acting skills in the traditional art genre were revealed throughout his performance, which received abundant compliments from all the judges.

Singer and songwriter Vũ Cát Tường said: “As children’s songs can’t help you to expose your talent, you challenged yourself with a chèo extract. You not only presented your amazing vocals but also staged a very hilarious and mischievous play which was definitely attractive for everyone – both child and adult audiences.”

“I can’t say anything more because you are amazing and your performance was perfect,” she said.

Minh also sang Thành Phố Miền Quan Họ (The City of the Region of Love) solo, before singing a duet with his coach Đông Nhi. The duo shared the stage to sing We Belong Together, which is featured on Nhi’s newest album.

After the finale performance, Minh got 36.09 per cent of the audience vote – the highest rating among finalists. His performance earned the VNĐ300 million (US$13,300) first prize.

The runner-up titles were awarded to nine-year-old boy Thụy Bình and his teammate, 10-year-old Russian girl Milana – both from the team of singer Vũ Cát Tường; and to eight-year-old girl Mai Anh from the team of singer Noo Phước Thịnh. Each runner-up received a VNĐ50 million ($2,200) prize. — VNS
