Hue celebrates UN Days of Vesak

Hue, which is among the four localities selected for the 2014 United Nation Days of Vesak, marked a grand opening ceremony on Saturday night, gathering thousands of Buddhist followers.

THUA THIEN - HUE (VNS) —  Hue, which is among the four localities selected for the 2014 United Nation Days of Vesak, marked a grand opening ceremony on Saturday night, gathering thousands of Buddhist followers.

The ceremony was held in the Nghinh Luong Pavilion, with the participation of local authorities, Buddhism Shangha, Buddhist followers and local residents. The days highlighted peace and solidarity for peace around the world at a time when global turmoil and disasters are on the rise.

On the occasion of the ceremony, the city had a lantern floating on the local Huong River, a street parade for Buddha travelling around the city from Dieu De pagoda to Tu Dam pagoda, and a flowered vehicle parade at night.

An exhibition of old and new books on Buddhism is open to the public at Lieu Quan Buddhism Centre during the four days from May 10 – 13.

All the pagodas and homes of Buddhist followers in the city are decorated beautifully and colourfully this time of the year to mark the occasion of Buddha's birthday. Hue is considered a Buddhism cradle in Viet Nam, and it is home to more than 300 pagodas. — VNS
