HA NOI (VNS) — Green labels marking eco-products have become trendy marketing devices in Viet Nam.

A workshop on labelling systems between experts from Viet Nam and Thailand - a country that established the green-label system in 1997 - was held in Ha Noi on Monday.

Nguyen Thu Ha, a member of a research group at the Environmental Administration, said businesses meeting the 14 criteria needed to qualify for a green label would benefit greatly.

She said approved products received subsidies from the Government and priority on the lists of commodities chosen for public purchase. Chosen companies will also be exempt from export duties.

Currently, there are only three accredited enterprises in Viet Nam, including Dien Quang Lamp JSC, Jotun Paints (Viet Nam) Co. Ltd, and Fuji Xerox Viet Nam Co. Ltd.

According to Sirithan Pairoj-Boroboon, director of Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation, criteria for the eco-label in his country have increased to 97 specifications last year from 14 in 1997, and are expected to reach 103 this year.

He said each company was in charge of its own registration procedures.

The workshop, part of a promotion campaign for a green tag in Viet Nam, was co-hosted by the ASEAN Vinyl Council and the research group from the Environmental Administration. — VNS
