THỪA THIÊN-HUẾ — Three earthquakes struck the mountainous A Lưới District in Thừa Thiên-Huế Province on Wednesday. No damage to life and property was reported, the local disaster management cell said.

The first earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 hit the district at 3.23pm and lasted several minutes. Its epicentre was at 16.218 north and 107.345 east.

The second one was not as strong and occurred at 7.01pm, with its epicentre was at 16.230 north and 107.281 east.

Ninety minutes later, at 8:34pm, a 2.5 magnitude earthquake shook the district again. Its epicentre was at 16.226 north and 107.208 east.

The recurring earthquakes triggered panic among locals and residents of the neighbouring mountainous Đắkrông District in Quảng Trị Province.

Hồ Văn Ngọc, a commune official in Đắkrông, told local newspapers that residents ran out of their homes during the earthquakes.

There has been no damage to life and property, Thừa Thiên-Huế Province’s Centre for Flood and Storm Prevention and Rescuing said. The national Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre is monitoring the situation closely.

Last year, six earthquakes hit A Lưới. Locals suspect that the quakes were a post-construction impact of local power plants, which has happened in Quảng Nam Province.

Scientists have not yet provided an official reason for the cause of the earthquakes. — VNS
