Drought hurts Dak Nong crops

DAK NONG (VNS) — More than 12,000ha of coffee and pepper plants in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong were damaged due to drought in the first six months this year. About 800ha were destroyed.

More than 500ha of rice fields were also damaged by drought. As many as 12 whirlwinds occurred in the province in the first six months, causing losses of VND40 billion ($1.9 million).

More than 40 irrigation systems had fallen into disrepair.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has allotted VND23.5 billion ($1.1 million) for the province to recover from the drought. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also gave the province VND6.3 billion ($300,000) to fix irrigation systems. — VNS
