QUANG TRI (VNS) — More than 500ha of pine trees in the central Quang Tri Province died due to the prolonged heatwave, causing losses of several billion Vietnamese dong to local companies and households.

The trees had become weak after being attacked by caterpillars last year.

The province's Agriculture and Rural Development Department said almost 1,500ha of pine trees had been attacked by caterpillars in 2014.

The department is instructing companies and households to isolate pine forests hit by caterpillars and to take measure to prevent fires in areas with dying pine trees.

Director of Road 9 Plantation Company Limited Le Lu said the company was managing 1,300ha of pine trees, which were 25 to 35 years old.

The trees were unable to withstand pests and the severe weather.

Meanwhile, the People' Committee in Central Highlands province of Dak Lak reported that prolong heatwave and drought had destroyed nearly 52,800ha of crops during the dry season, causing losses worth VND1.7 trillion (US$78 million).

The committee asked the government to send 500 tonnes of rice as the people in districts such as Ea Kar, Ea H'leo and Krong Bong were likely to suffer from hunger. — VNS
