QUANG BINH (VNS) — Fishermen in central Quang Binh Province found a giant ribbon fish (Trichiurus lepturus) on a local beach late yesterday afternoon.

The fish was measured at 4.1m long and weighed 40kg. Found in the province's Bo Trach District, the fish was described as weak after strong waves apparently forced it onto the beach.

It later died when the farmers attempted to return it to the ocean.

Ribbon fish are endemic to the Red Sea. The average length of the fish is 0.6m to 0.9m. The fish found yesterday was unusually large.

Locals consider the fish a sacred species, as it is rarely seen. They conducted a burial for the ribbon fish, hoping it would assure safe trips on the sea. — VNS
