THUA THIEN – HUE (VNS) — Fishermen in the central Thua Thien-Hue on Thursday released into the ocean a green sea turtle, which is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The turtle was caught accidentally in the net of a local fisherman in Tam Giang lagoon in the province's Quang Dien District on Thursday afternoon.

The turtle was 40cm wide and 50cm long, and weighed 12kg. Local aquaculture authorities identified it as Chelonia mydas of the Cheloniidae family, which are endemic to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

According to the local department of seafood exploitation and protection, nine out of 10 turtles found in the lagoon and local beaches have been saved and returned to the ocean in recent times. — VNS
