NINH THUAN (VNS) — Authorised agencies are investigating the cause of death of a wild male gaur in the central-coastal Ninh Thuan Province's Bac Ray 2 Village.
The body of the animal was found near a local forest last Saturday night.
Nguyen Cong Van, director of Phuoc Binh National Park, said that the wild gaur was suspected to have died of old age.
He added that lack of food due to prolonged hot weather was believed to have caused the animal's death. The one-tonne wild gaur mated with captive cows and produced more than 20 young hybrid gaurs over several years in the province.
The provincial science and technology department has conducted a genetic evaluation project to assess the possibility of developing hybrid gaurs in the province. — VNS
