BINH THUAN (VNS) — Red mud spilled from a reservoir built for a titanium extraction facility in Binh Thuan Province on Monday, clogging up nearby streets and residential areas and causing traffic congestion.
The spill took place at the facility operated by the Binh Thuan Minerals Investment and Trade JSC in the province's Ham Thuan Nam District at around 8am.
The reservoir is located in Ham Thuan Nam District's Thuan Quy Commune, some 200km away from HCM City.
The spill caused traffic congestion on the road linking Thuan Quy Commune (in Ham Thuan Nam District) with Tien Thanh Commune in Phan Thiet City. On Monday morning, some 100 vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, were stuck at the site.
Le Tien Phuong, chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Thuan Province, was quoted by the Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper as saying that a team has been sent to the site to bring the red sludge spill under control and facilitate transportation on the road. — VNS
