HCM CITY (VNS)— Local authorities have collected about 10 tonnes of sand, containing about 80 per cent oil that washed up onto beaches in the southern coastal city of Vung Tau on Wednesday.
The oil appeared on the city's Sau, Chi Linh and Cua Lap beaches. From morning until afternoon, as the oil spillage occurred, balls of oil and sand formed various shapes and sizes stretching one kilometre along the beaches.
Nguyen Huu Duc, deputy head of the Vung Tau Natural Resources and Environment Department, said oil spills had appeared in the last six years in Vung Tau during this period.
City authorities have sent oil samples to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, where scientists will try to identify its origin. — VNS
