Monkey bites people

Update: March, 28/2015 - 22:00

It is not a good idea to feed wild animals.

People fed a monkey on a mountain on the Son Tra peninsula.

It then started to bite people.

Rangers now have to catch it and take it somewhere else.

DA NANG (VNS) — Forest rangers from the Son Tra-Ngu Hanh Son Forest Protection department are trying to capture a male monkey (Macaca leonia) after it bit some tourists, an official said yesterday.

The monkey had scared tourists on the Ban Co Mountain in Son Tra peninsula, the Deputy Head of the Department, Le Phuoc Bay, said yesterday.

He said the monkey had appeared in the area few days ago and bitten some tourists when they tried to give him some food.

"We tried to capture it, but it was difficult to approach the animal and capture him. He will probably starve because there is no food in the area," Bay said.

The mountain located 600 metres above sea level is one of the most visited sites in the peninsula and enjoys good traffic.

Bui Van Tuan, a biologist from the Centre of Biodiversity Conservation, GreenViet, said the male monkey would have to be captured and transported in a cage because Son Tra Mountain is not its natural habitat.

He explained that tourists would continue to annoy the monkey by trying to feed it.

"The monkey is very aggressive, and any overtures from humans might trigger defensive actions. It needs to be cared for at a wild animal rescue centre before being released into the forest," Tuan said.

GLOSSARY

Forest rangers from the Son Tra-Ngu Hanh Son Forest Protection department are trying to capture a male monkey (Macaca leonia) after it bit some tourists, an official said yesterday.

Every living thing known to people on Earth has a scientific name, which is a bit like a person having a first name and a family name. In this case, it is the scientific name of a monkey known as a northern pig-tailed macaque. Many other monkeys that are a little like it, but not the same, also have the scientific name beginning with Macaca but are not Leonia.

The mountain located 600 metres above sea level is one of the most visited sites in the peninsula and enjoys good traffic.

A peninsula is a piece of land that goes out into the sea, or into a lake and is surrounded by water on three sides but is connected to a main body of land on one side. The word comes to English from the Latin words "paene insula", which means "nearly an island".

Bui Van Tuan, a biologist from the Centre of Biodiversity Conservation, GreenViet, said the male monkey would have to be captured and transported in a cage because Son Tra Mountain is not its natural habitat.

A biologist is a scientist who studies and knows a lot about living things, such as animals and plants.

The natural habitat of an animal is where it lives in the wild with the correct amount of food and shelter available.

The monkey is very aggressive, and any overtures from humans might trigger defensive actions.

Aggressive means wanting to fight.

Overtures are signs of wanting to start some or other sort of interaction with the monkey, such as talking to it, teasing it or offering it food.

Defensive actions by a monkey are things it would do to protect itself.

To trigger defensive actions means to do something that would make the monkey do something to defend itself.
