Mekong rice exports on the rise

HA NOI (VNS)— The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta exported 670,000 tonnes of rice in the first two months of 2013, fetching US$304 million – a year-on-year increase of 18 per cent.

Asia was the region's largest market, with 65 per cent of consumption, followed by America, Africa, Europe and Oceania.

The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta expects to export between 6.5 and 6.8 million tonnes of rice in 2013.

To this end, the region will promote the development of its agricultural service system for rural areas and apply advanced biotechnology to selection and breeding. In addition, it will expand production of high-quality rice to meet world market demand.-VNS
