Da Nang IT sector earns $238m revenue

Update: November, 16/2013 - 09:21

DA NANG ( (VNS) — Information technology businesses in the central city have earned a massive VND5 trillion (US$238 million) in revenues and an export turnover of $25 million so far this year.

According to the director of the city's information and communication department, Pham Kim Son, the local IT sector has seen stable growth at a rate between 20 and 30 per cent since the economic downturn in 2008.

"It's a significant growth of the IT sector as other industries are yet to recover from the economic crisis. The sector also employs 5,000 staff across 600 businesses in its centralised IT parks," Son said, adding that in 2006, the city's IT exports was a mere $1.3 million.

"The IT industry has played a key role in drawing more foreign investors and creating growth opportunities for local businesses," Son said.

He said the city had accelerated administrative reform by moving public services online, from 10 services for city agencies to 464 in 2013.

"We're aiming to apply more digital procedures to 1,200 public services for the city's 56 communes, precincts and departments."

In August, the city launched the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure system, which includes a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), wireless internet, data centre and a centre for training and research on IT applications.

The move is part of the city's strategy to facilitate the spread of E-Government, by connecting all the city's agencies and grassroots administrations.

The city also began operating IBM's intelligent operations centre to efficiently manage its water and transport systems.

The city plans to build a software park in the Da Phuoc urban area – the area's second software park.

In April, the US's Rocky Lai & Associates Inc officially began construction of a 341-ha Da Nang IT Park with a total investment of $278 million.

Da Nang is one of the biggest cities developing centralised information centres, after Ha Noi and HCM City. — VNS
