QUẢNG NINH – Vân Đồn International Airport received its first flight at 10am yesterday before if officially opens in December.

This is the first airport to be built by a private Vietnamese firm. Construction started in March 2016 by Sun Group with total investment VNĐ7.7 trillion (US$333.48 million) under the build-operation-transfer (BOT) model.

Chairman of Quảng Ninh Province’s People’s Committee Nguyễn Đức Long said the success of Vân Đồn International Airport would help the province attract more investment for fast and sustainable development.

The project will also open trade and development opportunities for the economic and tourism development of Vân Đồn and contribute to turning Quảng Ninh into an international tourist centre.

The airport terminal covers nearly 27,000 sq.m, and will have a capacity of 2.5 million passengers per year by 2020.

It will able to handle seven aircraft at a time before being expanded to 15 by 2030.
