Special item market for Đoan Ngọ Festival 2018

Đoan Ngọ Festival held on the 5th of the 5th lunar month is a widely celebrated event among the many traditional festivals of Việt Nam.

HCM CITY – Đoan Ngọ Festival held on the 5th of the 5th lunar month is a widely celebrated event among the many traditional festivals of Việt Nam.

Although it is not as grand as the Lunar New Year holiday, it is an occasion in which the Vietnamese hold family reunions.

During this time, specialty food items such as rice wine, glutinous rice, sticky rice, bamboo shoots and fruits of all kinds are sold.

The Bánh Ú Lá Tre (four-cornered rice dumpling) is popular in traditional markets, supermarkets and on HCM City’s main streets.

Large markets such as Bà Chiểu market sell Bánh Ú Lá Tre from VNĐ20,000 (US$ 0.9) to VNĐ120,000 (US $5) for 10 items, depending on the kind of dumpling. 

The Đoan Ngọ festival is also the season for special fruits such Ri 6 durian and mangosteen from Bình Dương Province’s Lái Thiêu Town.

The Ri 6 durian is selling for VNĐ100,000 ($5) per kg and the mangosteen for VNĐ80,000 ($4) to VNĐ120,000 ($6).

Văn Tuấn, a fruit shop owner in HCM City’s Phú Nhuận District, said that prices of fruit during the festival were normal as there was enough supply.

Besides food items, flowers are also good sellers, from VNĐ25,000 ($1) to VNĐ60,000 ($2.5) per bunch, depending on the type.

Some companies are offering goods trays and delivery service for busy people for VNĐ1.5 million ($70) to VNĐ5 million ($220) per tray. – VNS
