HCM CITY— HCM City has exported 12.6 million ornamental fish in the first 10 months of the year, 14.3 percent higher than in the same period last year, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said.

Neon tetra, molly, guppy, flowerhorn, discus, and freshwater angle accounted for a large portion of the exports.

Huỳnh Thị Kim Cúc, deputy director of the department, said the fish went to 47 countries and territories, with the EU accounting for 60-70 per cent.

Ornamental fish are one of the city’s important agricultural products, and have high economic value and development potential, she said.

Some 87 million fish have been bred this year, up 2.4 per cent year-on-year.

A city plan for 2016-20 targets breeding of 150-180 million ornamental fish a year by 2020 and export 40-50 million of them for US$40-50 million.—VNS
