LAO CAI (VNS) — Officials from the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai held a working session with a delegation from Hong He County in China's Yunnan Province on Monday to discuss preparations for a bilateral cross-border economic co-operation zone.

Vice Chairman of the Lao Cai People's Committee Le Ngoc Hung said local authorities were pushing ahead with surveys, planning work and training human resources for the zone, so that it could be put into operation immediately after receiving government approval.

The two countries' governments as well as relevant ministries and sectors had agreed on the principles to build the zone, and necessary preparations were underway, he said.

Vice head of Hong He County Nie Ming highlighted the connecting role of the county and Lao Cai Province on the Kunming – Ha Noi – Hai Phong – Quang Ninh economic corridor and the Viet Nam-China cross-border economic belt.

He said the cross-border economic co-operation zone would help promote economic development in Yunnan's southern region and Viet Nam's northwestern provinces. — VNS
