HA NOI (VNS) — Head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam (CAAV) Lai Xuan Thanh will create a group to research the logistics of setting up a direct air route between Ha Noi and HCM City that passes through Laotian and Cambodian airspace.

The route shortens the flight between the major cities by 85 km, saving five minutes of flying and 190 kilogrammes of fuel. Led by deputy head of the CAAV Do Quang Viet, the group will consist of 20 leaders of specialised units in the Ministry of Defence, the aviation sector and the Ministry of Transport. They will work with Laotian and Cambodian aviation authorities to implement the new route.

The idea of the direct route was rejected when first proposed in 2009 by former Vietnam Airlines pilot Mai Trong Tuan, then again in 2012 when PhD Tran Dinh Ba re-launched the idea. In July, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang asked the CAAV to consider the idea.

On September 10, Thang asked the CAAV to continue testing more direct air routes and to report on the logistics of the Ha Noi-HCM City route by the end of this month. — VNS
