DA NANG  (VNS) — The central city's first Centre of Integrated Circuits (CENTIC) was inaugurated at Quang Trung Software Park on Saturday.

The centre will play a key role in boosting the Information Technology (IT) industry, train hi-tech human resources for IC design and research, and provide embedded systems for domestic and foreign enterprises.

"The establishment of the centre will be a crucial step in giving a boost to the IT industry in Da Nang as a major IT centre in Viet Nam after Ha Noi and HCM City," said deputy director of CENTIC Nguyen Hoai Duc.

"Our IC design and production will develop wide-ranging applications in mobile phones, wireless receivers, digital television and electronic production. We wish to create made-in-Viet Nam IC products for the domestic, Southeast Asian and Asia-Pacific markets," he said.

He added that the centre would attract researchers, scientists and IT students from across the country to the city in the near future.

According to the director of the city's information and communication department, Pham Kim Son, the local IT sector has developed greatly and now has 5,000 employees in 600 businesses in its centralised IT parks.

IT businesses in the central city earned a massive VND5 trillion (US$238 million) in revenues and an export turnover of $25 million last year.

"The introduction of CENTIC will help the city apply more digital procedures in 1,200 public services for the city's 56 communes, precincts and departments," Son said.

Last year, the city launched the IT infrastructure system, which includes a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), wireless internet, data centre and a centre for training and research on IT applications.

The city also began using IBM's intelligent operations centre to manage its water and transport systems efficiently.

American firm Rocky Lai&Associates Inc began construction of a 341-ha Da Nang IT Park with a total investment of $278 million.

The city has developed Quang Trung software park and Da Nang software park as centralised centres. Da Nang is the biggest city after Ha Noi and HCM City to develop centralised information centres. — VNS
