HA NOI (VNS) — Recent statistics have shown Viet Nam Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) and Viettel are dominating the country's telecommunications sector.

Data from the Viet Nam 2013 White Book on information and communications technologies released on Monday by the Ministry of Information and Communications, showed VNPT with 75.4 per cent of the fixed line telephone market, while Viettel commanded a 40.05 per cent of Viet Nam's mobile subscriptions.

According to the findings, Viettel trailed VNPT in the fixed line market with 22.96 per cent, followed by FPT Telecom with 0.23 per cent, SPT with 1.21 per cent, and VTC with 0.06 per cent.

In the mobile sector, VNPT subsidiaries MobiFone and Vinaphone ranked second and third with 21.4 per cent and 19.88 per cent. Vietnamobile and GMobile shared the remaining market share with 10.74 per cent and 3.93 per cent, respectively.

Findings also showed the number of mobile-phone subscribers and internet users had increased 3.42 per cent and 2.46 per cent, respectively, compared with those in 2011.

The book showed that the number of fixed broadband Internet subscribers rose by 24.74 per cent, reaching 4.8 million. However, the number of 3G users declined from 16 million to 15.7 million after network providers wiped out registered subscribers who did not use the services.

According to the white book, the total revenue from information technology (IT) in 2012 reached US$25.5 billion, an 86.3 per cent increase on 2011 figures.

The book has been sent to agencies specialising in IT, international IT companies and embassies co-operating with Viet Nam in IT and communications. — VNS
