Complaints prompt Ministry to increase telco service standards

HA NOI (VNS) — The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) yesterday issued a circular requiring tighter management on the service quality of mobile phones, fixed line telephones and ADSL internet.

The three core services must follow the National Quality Standard Certificates coding 36-2011/BTTTT, 35-2011/BTTTT and 34-2011/BTTTT, respectively.

The move follows the increasing number of complaints about telecom services by users across the country.

According to leading world internet gauger Akamai, internet speed in Viet Nam had decreased by 21 per cent compared to 2011.

According to the US based company, the speed of internet in Viet Nam fell from 1.664 Mbps (megabits per second) in 2011 to 1.3 Mbps in 2012.

The ministry said it would not apply the certificate to dial-up internet as most providers had discontinued the service due to the slump in demand.

Viet Nam has some 130 million mobile subscribers, 5 million fixed line telephone subscribers, 4.5 million ADSL internet subscribers and 33 million internet users.

They subscribe to one of six mobile network operators, three fixed line telephone service providers and twelve internet service providers (ISPs). — VNS
