HA NOI — The plan to improve roads and highways was the priority for the transport sector this year, said deputy head of the Directorate for Roads Nguyen Xuan Cuong at a press conference last week.

The constructions of five key projects are scheduled to start this year.
They include the automobile-only Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Road, which will stretch from Cat Hai Island to the northern port city of Hai Phong via the Dinh Vu Peninsula.
Other projects aim to fix weak bridges on national highways, to upgrade Highway 5 and Highway 6 (the section that runs through the northern province of Hoa Binh).
The two others will consolidate Highway No 91 in the southern province of An Giang to prevent erosion and strengthen Road Asset Management.
Cuong said that the economic slowdown had posed financial difficulties for road maintenance. -- VNS
