HCM CITY — Ninety-seven projects in southern Kien Giang Province's Phu Quoc Island are likely to have their licences revoked, the Nguoi Lao Dong (The Labourer) newspaper reported on July 23.

Only nine out of the 229 projects approved by authorised agencies so far have been completed and put into operation, the report said.

The Government inspectorate recently proposed to Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung that he directs the Kien Giang administration to revoke investment licences from 97 projects whose construction has been excessively delayed.

The Government inspectors have concluded that the island administration received investment projects without proper planning.

Of the 97 projects that have been earmarked for cancellation, 63 did not conform to the province's zoning plans, 20 had land use plans that did not match their commitments to the district administration and 14 others had not been allocated land for development.

The 7ha ecotourism project in Ong Lang Beach of the Viet Ecology Company and the 6.4ha Resort and Restaurant project of the Bao Minh Company were approved for development in 2004, but until now, no land has been allocated for both projects.

Nguyen Thanh Tung, head of the Phu Quoc Island Development and Investment Management Department, agreed with the Government Inspectorate's proposal to revoke licenses, but said the number was 95 and not 97. He attributed the difference to a "typing mistake."

"In case the Govern-ment allows some of the projects to continue, the district would ask investors to accelerate their development," he said.

The island administration would also re-calculate land prices in project areas to ensure benefits of the state, investors and people effected by them, he added — VNS
