Hong Kong ‘bun' fest inspires robotics contest

Update: April, 28/2012 - 09:01

HA NOI — The final round of Viet Nam Robot Contest 2012 (Robocon) will take place on May 7-13 in HCM City.

Robocon International this year in Hong Kong coincides with the territory's bun festival, which has inspired the challenge of this year's event and the competition in HCM City.

Themed Peng On Dai Gat (Peace and Prosperity), participants will have to climb a tower to pick up lucky dumplings.

In this year's Robocon the "manual robot" controller has to sit on and drive another robot. Meanwhile, the "collector robot" will have to take the bun from the first and the second level and deposit in a basket. After that the "collector robot" will have to lift the "manual robot" up in order to put the bun in the uppermost level basket.

Tran Dung Trinh, deputy general director of Viet Nam Television, and head of the organising board, said this year's event will be more challenging than ever.

"The ‘manual robot' must be strong enough for the driver to sit on and complete their tasks. Robocon Viet Nam in 2012 promises to be very interesting," he said.

The Robocon qualifiers, which took place earlier this month in Da Nang, HCM City and Ha Noi, attracted 235 teams.

The final will take place at Military Zone 7's stadium.

The winning team will represent Viet Nam at the Asian Broadcasting Union's Robocon in Hong Kong in August.

The competition is sponsored by Toyota Motor Viet Nam (TMV), which has sponsored Robocon for the last 11 years. — VNS
