HCM CITY — Construction of the Sai Gon Bridge 2, which will link Binh Thanh District and District 2 in HCM City, is likely to start next month with a total investment of VND1.1 trillion (US$52.38 million).
The HCM City People's Committee recently granted a investment licence for the project to the HCM City Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Co (CII), which will implement it under the BT (Build-Transfer) method.
According to CII, the project was scheduled to start construction in the first quarter of this year, but slow land clearance in District 2 caused further delays. Now, it is set to start on April 14, Le Vu Hoang, CII general director, told the media.
The 913m long, 23.5m wide, four-lane bridge will stand parallel to the current Sai Gon Bridge. The bridge is scheduled for completion after 21 months of construction.
The new bridge is expected to reduce traffic burden on the current Sai Gon Bridge, which was built over five decades ago.
The Sai Gon Bridge 2 construction is among several important traffic projects that HCM City will work on this year. These include the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge, the Thu Duc intersection, Binh Tien Bridge, and others.
The Thu Thiem 2 Bridge will be located along Ton Duc Thang Street, connecting with Thu Thiem new urban area in District 2.
The Thu Duc intersection at the eastern gate of HCM City will be extended by 34 metres. It will have an underground shelter and a 376m long flyover. — VNS
