VN thrives because of farm sector

Update: February, 25/2012 - 09:08

HA NOI — Viet Nam's economy had thrived thanks to its agricultural sector, said the British daily the Financial Times.

"Viet Nam is the world's biggest exporter of cashew nuts and black pepper, the second biggest exporter of rice and coffee and a major global supplier of farmed fish," the daily said.

Viet Nam's millions of smallholding farmers have capitalised on the country's integration into the global market to become successful producers of high volume, low value agricultural commodities, it said.

Viet Nam had some of the most productive farmers in Asia, however, it would face major challenges when it began to develop and restructure the agricultural sector, said Prakash Jhanwer, who heads the Viet Nam, Indonesia and Laos offices for Olam International, the Singapore-based agricultural commodities giant.-VNS
