IT firm signs contract with insurer association

HA NOI — FPT Information System and the Association of Vietnamese Insurers (AVS) agreed on Thursday to develop a database to help insure vehicle owners.

The VND32 billion (US$1.5 million) project titled Business Intelligence - Geographic Information System will be developed by FPT Information System to create a comprehensive management and supervision system for the compulsory insurance of vehicles across the country.

Viet Nam is now home to 32 million motorcycles and more than 1.5 million cars and by 2015, predictions put those numbers at 36 million and 5 million, respectively.

Vinasat 2 satellite launch still on schedule

HA NOI — Director of Radio Frequencies Department of the Ministry of Information and Communications Doan Quang Hoan has said the Vinasat 2 satellite will be launched into orbit April this year as planned.

The satellite will be launched with a Japanese satellite, both of which are manufactured by US company Lockheed Martin.

Total investment for the Vinasat 2 project are estimated between US$280-300 million and according to VNPT, the life-span of Vinasat 2 will be 15 years, with return on investment expected within 10 years.

Bkav corporation buys new domain

HA NOI — Anti-virus corporation Bkav officially has begun operating its new international domain Bkav.com after successfully buying the domain from a US company at a cost of VND2.3 billion (US$109,000).

General director of Bkav Nguyen Tu Quang said 10 years ago Bkav was not interested in expanding its brand abroad, and did not need an international domain.

Quang urged domestic companies to buy international domains after they had developed trademarks, to avoid buying preferred domain names in the future.

VietnamPost to establish Datapost VN

HA NOI — VietnamPost is expected to finalise procedures to establish new company DataPost by merging and restructuring five centres of the VietnamPost.

DataPost will allow customers, especially businesses, to send large amounts of letters and documents to many recipients in a short period of time.

According to leaders of VietnamPost, poor performance of the five centres will be turned around by the move in order to meet the increasing demand for post services.

VinaPhone partners in Blackberry packages

HA NOI — VinaPhone and the Research In Motion (RIM) group announced on Tuesday they would be joining forces in Viet Nam.

Under the deal, RIM and VinaPhone will supply BlackBerry service packages for Vinaphone subscribers, including specialised services for business clients.

Mobifone presses for information records

HA NOI — Phone provider MobiFone has announced it will support 3,800 pre-paid subscribers to register their personal information after the HCM City People's Committee asked mobile providers to stop service for more than 37,000 subscribers who provided inaccurate registration information.

Mobifone will call and send SMS messages to customers to guide them to re-register their information to continue receiving phone service.

If customer information provided is inaccurate, subscribers can show their identify cards at Mobifone shops to verify the information. — VNS
