A modern maritime logistics ship was put into operation at Sa Kỳ Seaport in the central province of Quảng Ngãi’s Bình Sơn District on Wednesday.

The Lý Sơn 168 is nearly 46 metres in length and 7.7 metres in width. It has total investment capital of nearly VNĐ32 billion (US$1.4 million). Of this, around VNĐ26 billion ($1.1 million) was borrowed from the Việt Nam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development following the Government’s preferential policies for fishery development.

The ship’s design includes fish tanks, a freezer storage system, a seawater ice-making machine and a processing workshop. The ship can carry from 300-400 tonnes of seafood and has a maximum speed of 12 nautical miles per hour.

City introduces new poverty guidelines

HCM City has adopted new poverty guidelines for 2016 to 2020, according to the city’s steering committee for its sustainable poverty reduction programme.

The city will use multi-dimensional poverty statistics to define poverty, including income and five criteria on accessing basic social benefits: education, healthcare, employment and social security, living conditions and access to information.

The new criteria will be applied for people with permanent or temporary residence permits in the city. The new criteria have been piloted in a number of wards and communes in districts 6, 11, Tân Phú and Bình Chánh.

Outdated cars and trucks scrapped

Around 140,000 outdated vehicles, including nearly 43,000 passenger cars and 97,000 trucks, have been scrapped, according to data from the Việt Nam Register (VR). Last year alone, the country had nearly 21,000 outdated vehicles.

According to the VR, around 160,500 vehicles three months overdue for inspection have not been checked at registration agencies as required.

Most of the outdated vehicles have been sold to scrap traders who will dissemble them for parts. However, some outdated vehicles are still in use in rural areas.

Hot Air Balloon Festival to heat up in Huế

An International Hot Air Balloon Festival will be held for the first time in the central city of Huế from May 4 to 5 as part of the Huế Festival 2016, Chế Công Trung, director of Huế Festival Centre, said on Wednesday.

Pilots and balloonists from Thailand, Netherlands, Malaysia, the US, the Philippines and others will participate.

Over 20 art performances from countries and territories across the world have registered to take part in the festival from April 29 to May 4.

Cold kills 480 tonnes of fish, seafood

The recent cold season has killed 480 tonnes of aquatic products, according to data from the Hà Nội Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Bureau of Fisheries.

As many as seven districts had to sustain heavy losses, estimated at nearly VNĐ15 billion ($670,000).

The bureau offered the People’s Committee support of VNĐ2.2 billion ($98,000) to help residents recover.
