Ha Noi factories fined for polluting

Ha Noi's Environmental Crime Prevention and Fighting Police Department has fined 38 factories and enterprises for discharging untreated wastewater and emissions into the environment.

Most of the companies had a wastewater treatment system which was out of order while the emissions treatment system fell below regulated standards. They all have been fined a total of VND139 million (over US$6,000) for violating the regulations.

Local authorities plan to increase their actions on environmental management and effectiveness of investigation to reduce pollution this year.

Students in remote areas receive free rice

More than 1,400 tonnes of rice will be given to 18,500 poor students living in remote areas of the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) province of Kon Tum, thanks to a long-term programme launched by the province's People's Committee.

The programme aims to help local students develop their study while parents face difficulties to pay for their children's education.

Many Tay Nguyen students have been travelling several hours to go to school. Some of them must live with their teachers at school.

Tien Giang approves clean water project

The People's Committee of Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta province of Tien Giang has approved a VND68 billion ($3.1 million) project to protect clean water in remote districts.

The project will begin in June and will be completed next year. It will provide clean water for residents of Tan Phu Dong and Go Cong Tay.
