Central provinces face water shortage

Update: January, 11/2016 - 09:49
The two biggest reservoirs in the central province of Khanh Hoa only contain one-fourth of their water capacity, as rainfall was insufficient during the annual rainy season.

The water shortage is expected to affect 4,200 ha of agricultural cultivation of eight communes in Ninh Hoa Town and Van Ninh District.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring province of Phu Yen's Song Hinh reservoir with total capacity of 323 million cubic metres has only 250 million cubic metres of water.

The central province of Ninh Thuan has submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister, asking for capital to build four urgent irrigation works to reduce losses caused by this year's water shortage.

Enterprises access cheap capital

In 2015, the Bank and Enterprise Connected Programme provided total loans of VND173 trillion ($7.8 billion), an increase of nearly three times in comparison with a yearly plan, to 4,732 enterprises, private business owners, co-operatives and small traders.

After four years of operation, the programme had lent VND241 trillion ($11 billion) to 9,235 customers at a preferential interest rate of 6-7 per cent per year for short-term loans and 9 per cent for medium- and long-term loans.
