Can Tho to spend $367m on development

The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta city of Can Tho will spend more than VND8.25 trillion (US$367 million) for rural economic and social development by 2020, under the national programme on new style rural area.

The money is expected to come from the State and province's budget, organisations and individuals.

By 2020, the city will upgrade the irrigation system and infrastructure in rural areas, and increase income of local residents. It will also focus on promoting agricultural production and product consumption.

Key road to connect with Highway 1

Construction on a road connecting the Pham Van Dong Street and Go Dua intersection to the National Highway 1, located in Thu Duc District, began on Thursday. It will be completed within two years.

The 2.7-kilometre road is built under a Build-Transfer contract. Its total investment capital is VND1.13 trillion ($50.2 million).

Le Dinh Tho, deputy minister of Transport, said the construction would reduce traffic jams and accidents, as well as attract more investment to the district.

Ministry holds national sports competition

The Ministry of Education and Training held the biennial National Sports Competition for Students with disabilities in Can Tho City on Thursday. More than 600 students across the country competed in athletics, football, table tennis, chess, volleyball and tug-of-war. The event will close on December 8.

International Volunteer Day opens in HCM CITY

The HCM City Youth Union today will hold a series of activities to mark the International Volunteer Day.

The programme aims to encourage residents and young people to raise funds for children in mountainous areas. It also calls for volunteers to clean parks, help patients in local hospitals, and collect notebooks to give to poor students. A free portrait photo taking session will be held at 5 Dinh Tien Hoang Street in District 1.
