Dengue fever cases increase

Around 20,000 cases of dengue fever, including 12 deaths, have been reported in the country this year, a rapid increase over the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Health's General Department of Preventive Medicine on Wednesday. In only Ha Noi, 820 cases were reported.

The number of dengue fever cases is increasing mostly in southern and central regions, such as HCM City, and Dong Nai and Soc Trang provinces, according to the department's director Tran Dac Phu.

Four different types of dengue fever virus strains exist.

Youth associations celebrate National Day

Several thousand young people living in HCM City will participate in the festival day called Toi Yeu To Quoc Toi (I Love My Country-Viet Nam) launched by the city's Association of Vietnamese Students, in co-operation with Viet Nam Association for Young People, on Saturday to celebrate the 70th anniversary of National Day.

The event will include many cultural activities, music and song shows, and street performances staged by 2,000 students from local universities and colleges. Photo exhibitions and forums on the country's history will be featured.

Nearly 15,000 accidents so far in 2015

The country's number of traffic accidents was 14,622 in the first eight months of the year. Fatalities totalled 5,821 while more than 13,000 people were injured, reported by the National Traffic Safety Committee.

Local police handled more than 2.8 million traffic violations, and issued penalties worth over VND1.8 billion (US$81,000).

The main causes of accidents were speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and breaking traffic laws.
