$147m allocated for tertiary education

The Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to allocate VND3.1 trillion (US$147.6 million) from a World Bank loan to improve facilities and the quality of education at public universities.

For the 2015-16 academic year, the Ministry of Planning and Investment in coordination with the Ministry of Education and Training and Ministry of Finance will allocate funds for uncompleted projects and for projects in the midst of completing investment procedures.

City to probe scaffolding deaths

The chairman of HCM City People's Committee, Le Hoang Quan, has asked for a prompt investigation in the collapse of scaffolding that killed three people on July 10 in the city's District 7.

Speaking at a meeting on Monday, Quan said that the people responsible for the accident would be prosecuted.

He also told several government agencies to closely supervise labour safety at all building projects in the city.

The accident occurred at the construction site of the Mapletree Business Centre. Besides the three fatalities, five others were injured.

As many as 37 workplace accidents have occurred in HCM City this year, killing 41.

Of that figure, nearly half of the cases occurred in the construction field.

Taxi firms ordered to send black-box data

The Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam has told all provinces that transport companies must begin sending black-box data from taxis and container trucks to the Directorate by July 15.

Government Decree 86/ND-CP required that taxis and container trucks must be equipped with black boxes before July 1.

The built-in devices must be operating whenever vehicles are on the road.
