Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the allocation of VND 72.6 billion (US$3.5 million) to subsidise electricity and transport in the provinces of Quang Tri, Binh Thuan, Kien Giang, Quang Nam and Binh Dinh. Part of the money will be used for boats transporting fresh water and items for daily life to the province's islands.

City seeks extension for canal upgrade
The HCM City People's Committee has asked Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung for an extension until 2019 of an upgrading project on the city's canals of Tau Hu, Ben Nghe, Doi, and Te.
The project, with total capital of VND11.3 trillion ($538 million), includes Japan's ODA loans and corresponding capital from the city budget. It also calls for a 2,150-ha system of collecting and treating waste water. The aim is to improve the living environment of 1.5 million residents in districts 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and Binh Chanh.

HCM City to urbanise rice paddy fields
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the HCM City People's Committee plan to build waste treatment plants, roads, industrial parks and housing on 150 hectares of paddy fields in outlying HCM City.

Hoi An seeks solutions to beach erosion
Scientists and authorities in Hoi An have discussed ways to reduce erosion at beaches in Cua Dai Ward. City authorities said they wanted to invest more money in tourism infrastructure at beaches in Cam An Ward. They are considering building embankments to curb erosion.
