The Viet Nam Steel Association reports that its members produced over 1.27 million tonnes of steel in the first quarter of this year, an increase of nearly 18 per cent year-on-year.
Consumption totalled 1.3 million tonnes, an increase of over 10 per cent compared to the same time last year, the association said.
March saw the highest monthly consumption ever, with more than 651,000 tonnes sold.
Export turnover was 92,000 tonnes, accounting for 8 per cent of total sales, the association said.

Phu Yen fishermen receive free medicine
The Ministry of Health and the People's Committee of the south-central province of Phu Yen have presented 150 boxes of medicine to local fishermen.
This is part of a ministry programme that aims to help fishermen develop their careers and protect the nation's sovereignty.
Each medicine box contains drugs to treat common diseases and some health-care equipment.
Local fishermen have also been given healthcare tips and instructions on how to call for aid when they are at sea.

Drought affects cultivation in Gia Lai
A long-lasting drought has severely affected 164ha of cultivation in Krong Pa District in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, according to the provinces' Agriculture and Rural Development Department. It has caused a loss of nearly VND2.5 billion (US$119,000).
