Ly Son Island in the central province of Quang Ngai saw more than 3,500 visitors during Tet (Lunar New Year), a record-high. Besides the Hoang Sa Bac Hai flotilla memorial and exhibition house, other popular destinations like Hang and Duc pagodas and Cau Cave attracted a large number of visitors.
The island authorities have instructed local agencies to increase the services of transport boats and arrange more tourist guides at tourist destinations.

HCMC urges completion of flood-prevention measures
The chairman of the HCM City People's Committee, Le Hoang Quan, on Tuesday told the city's Steering Centre of the Urban Flood Control Programme and relevant departments to speed up flood-prevention projects.
The projects include building sluice gates and embankments to control high tides. The People's Committee will borrow about VND23 trillion (US$1.09 billion) from the World Bank for the projects, Quan said.

Delta research institute creates new rice strains
The Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute has created two more rice strains resistant to drought, and salinity and acid sulphate soils. The two rice strains are OM 8901 and OM 7262.
OM 8901 variety is resistant to drought and several diseases, has high yield and high quality while OM 7262 variety is resistant to salinity, acid sulphate soils and several diseases and has high quality.
The institute has created 32 rice strains which are resistant to drought, salinity and acid sulphate soils and meet export quality. The rice strains have been cultivated in the delta's coastal areas, the Long Xuyen Quadrangle, Dong Thap Muoi (Plain of Reeds) and Ca Mau peninsula. The rice strains have a yield of 5-8 tonnes per ha per crop.

HCM City's 12-day flower festival draws 500,000
The HCM City Spring Flower Festival 2015 closed on Tuesday and attracted nearly 500,000 visitors, according to the festival organiser.
The 12-day festival, which was held at Tao Dan Park in District 1, showcased more than 4,000 flowers, ornamental trees and fish of orchard owners and artisans from the south. The festival organiser also presented 355 awards to artisans.

Traffic accidents fall year-on-year
In the first two months of the year, the country recorded 4,115 traffic accidents, leaving 1,567 people dead and 3,771 injured, the National Traffic Safety Committee reported on Tuesday.
Compared to the same period last year, the number of traffic accidents, fatalities and injuries fell by 713, 251 and 970, respectively.
The committee plans to organise groups to inspect traffic in 11 provinces and cities that saw a high increase in accidents over the past two months.
