Speciality foods in demand as Tet nears

With Tet (Lunar New Year) approaching, sales of certain speciality foods has shot up more than ten-fold compared to normal days, according to shops in HCM City.

Shops selling northern specialities on Nguyen Dinh Chieu, Dien Bien Phu and Tran Quoc Toan streets are now busy with customers who buy dried bamboo shoots, vermicelli, thin-top mushroom, pork pies, glutinous rice grown in terrace fields, banh chung (square glutinous rice cake) and other kinds of traditional cakes, Dien grapefruits, and Canh oranges.

Supply is abundant and prices are stable. The prices of some items have increased by 10 per cent from last Tet, according to shop owners.
