Report reveals gaping weight disparity

The Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands) province of Kon Tum tops the country in the rate of children under five with stunted-growth malnutrition (about 40 per cent), followed by the northern province of Lai Chau (37 per cent), according to a report of the National Institute of Nutrition.

The southeastern province of Binh Duong leads the country in the rate of children under five with obesity (13.4 per cent), followed by HCM City (12.6 per cent).

City coach stations see more passengers

The number of passengers at interprovincial coach stations in HCM City has increased significantly in recent days as workers return to their hometowns to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year).

At Mien Dong Coach Station, which transports passengers to the southeastern, central and northern regions, the number increased from 19,000 passengers on normal days to 29,000 last Friday, and to 32,000 on Wednesday.

The number is estimated to increase to 50,000-60,000 a day this weekend four days before Tet, according to Thuong Thanh Hai, deputy director of the Mien Dong Coach Station.

Supply abundant at City wholesale markets

The goods supply for Tet at HCM City's wholesale produce markets are abundant, ensuring supply and stable prices, Nguyen Thi Hong, deputy chairwoman of the municipal People's Committee, said at the Thu Duc and Hoc Mon wholesale produce markets on Wednesday.

The Thu Duc wholesale produce market in Thu Duc District on February 10-11 bought 4,000 – 4,200 tonnes of goods each day, mostly vegetables and fruit. The market is expected to buy 7,200-7,500 tonnes of goods a day for the five days before Tet, according to the market management board.
